21 June 1992: Bangor, Maine to Burlington, Vermont

It was 292 miles (470 km) west from Bangor, Maine to Burlington, Vermont.

If there was an interstate freeway directly connecting the cities, it would be a four and a half hour drive, but there's not. Instead, it was six hours of driving on U.S. Route 2 through rural areas of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.

I remember seeing Mount Washington in the distance, skirting the White Mountain National Forest, crossing the Connecticut River, seeing some lovely older buildings in the manufacturing town of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, and passing through the valleys of the Green Mountains.

It was a day of drizzle and mist, often invoking the mood of a fantasy realm as we passed from emerald-hued valley to emerald-hued valley, each shrouded in mist. I remember how it looked more than details of where we went. It was a Sunday and there weren't many tourist attractions, so we took the opportunity to enjoy a leisurely drive.

Once we arrived in Burlington, we made our way to what's now the Travelodge South Burlington, which was then a Best Western, where we had our rooms reserved.

Total Travel Distance: 292 miles (470 km)
