1 June 1992: Albuquerque, New Mexico to Amarillo, Texas

We left Albuquerque, New Mexico early in the morning to avoid the approaching storm.

After eating breakfast at a fast food restaurant, we followed Interstate 40 288 miles (463 km) east to Amarillo, Texas, with storm clouds harassing us on the western horizon.

We stopped at a few roadside attractions along the way, but none of them were memorable enough for me to still recall. It was possibly one of the least memorable days of trip. We only had five hours of travel time, making it a more relaxed day, too.

We had reservations at Motel 6, so we went directly there upon arrival in Amarillo.

After unpacking our luggage, we went to a laundromat in a nearby strip mall to do some more laundry. There was a hair salon next to the laundromat, so my grandmother had her hair done. The car received an oil change later in the afternoon. We planned to get the car serviced approximately every 3000 miles (4828 km) during the trip, and that was our first opportunity.

The storm was getting closer as we ate dinner and then  retired to our rooms for the night.

Total Travel Distance: 288 miles (463 km)
